Survey Maps
The map below shows PatchBird survey points currently available across the areas covered by the program.
Each point represents the reference corner of a 1 × 1 km UTM grid. It is not necessarily the exact location where the survey must be conducted. When establishing a new survey location, participants may select a suitable observation point within 300 metres of the mapped reference point, following the Survey Protocol.
Using the Map
Survey points appear as you zoom further into the map. Start by locating the country or area you are interested in, then continue zooming until the individual grid points become visible. You can continue zooming in after the points appear to examine their position in the landscape more closely.
Click on a point to view its details and current availability.
The map uses the following status colours:
-
Available – the grid point is currently available for allocation
-
Allocated – the grid point has already been assigned to a participant
-
Inactive – the location is currently not active
Choose a Survey Grid Point
Choose a grid point that is practical for you to survey regularly. Click on it to see its details and current status.
You do not need to choose somewhere remote or particularly rich in birds. PatchBird is interested in ordinary places, too. The most useful survey point is one you can return to regularly over time.
Once a grid point has been allocated to you, select a suitable observation point within 300 metres of the mapped reference point. After your first survey, this observation point becomes fixed and should be used for subsequent surveys.
For full instructions on establishing and surveying a location, see the Survey Protocol.

Request Survey Areas
Can’t find your area on the map?
PatchBird is expanding progressively, and new survey areas can be added in response to participant interest. Send us the location you would like to survey – a nearby town, protected area, wetland or other recognisable place is enough.
You do not need to provide UTM coordinates. We can prepare a new block of survey points for the area.
Once the new survey points have been added, they will become available through the appropriate PatchBird survey map.
